Bobcats Notch First Victory in Michigan
The Bobcat softball team was in action for the first time this weekend in the Aquinas College Invitational Tournament in Grand Rapids Michigan, going 1-4 in five games winning their first game in program history. The win came in the first game of the fall season against the Aquinas College Saints JV Squad Friday evening as they would split on the day. Earning the first win was Covid Freshman pitcher Sam Goode. Goode comes to B&SC after an illustrious career in the circle at Cloverleaf high school. Goode Threw all 7 in the circle earning the victory allowing 7 earned runs while striking out 4 and tossing 63 of 88 pitches for strikes.
The Bobcats jumped out front in the top of the first as a pair of two out knocks by Sommer Bourne and Autumn Fuller got them on the board with a 1-0 lead. The Saints would strike back in the bottom of the inning with a three run home run to take the lead 3-1. The Saints would tack on another run in the bottom third to pad the lead to 4-1, before the Bobcats exploded for 4 runs in the top of the 4th to take a 5-4 lead. The scoring would start with an Amanda Linberg single to left, she would end up at third after a Rylee McCord double to left center. Both Bobcats would score on a Halle Williams missile into the left field corner. Shayla Haynes would follow Williams with an infield single, and then the tandem of Bourne and Fuller would push two more across the plate before the inning was over. Bourne and Fuller finished the game with 4 hits a piece and either scored or drove in 6 of the Bobcats 8 runs on the day. The Bobcats would extend the lead to 8-4 in the 6th as another pair of hits by Bourne and Fuller would set the table for Sophomore Kamia Pou to drive in Bourne with a single to left and Freshman backstop Mallory Perkins would bring everybody home on a double to right field. The Saints would make a push scoring two in the 6th and threatening with another in the bottom of the 7th. But the Bobcats would prevail, holding on for the first victory in program history.
The Bobcats would play 4 more games on the weekend dropping each one, but the games had their bright spots. Goode threw most of the innings and showed her strike throwing ability as she K'd 14 in her 29 innings while walking only 5. Sommer Bourne paced the offense going 9-16 (.562avg) with 3 doubles and 5 RBIs to go along with 5 runs scored. Halle Williams had 7 hits including 3 doubles and Autumn Fuller had 7 hits with 1 double. The Bobcats will be back in action next weekend at Oberlin College.
