Former Cincinnati State player named MLS Player of the week
Former Cincinnati State Technical & Community College player Omar Cummings of the Colorado Rapids was named Major League Soccer Player of the Week as voted by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 23 of the 2010 season.
Cummings played at Cincinnati State Technical & Community College for two years before transfering to the University of Cincinnati. He was drafted in the MLS SuperDraft by the Colorado Rapids.
This is the second time Cummings' has won the second player of the week, having won it for Week 14 in 2009.
The Jamaican forward had a hand in all three of the Rapids second half goals in the 3-0 win over Chivas USA last Saturday at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
In the 52nd minute, Cummings beat his man and ripped a hard shot at goalkeeper Zach Thornton from the right side. The Chivas keeper mishandeled the shot and the ball fell to the feet of Conor Casey who quickly tapped it in for the first goal of the game.
Cummings then scored the final two goals of the game on his own. In the 68th minute, Cummings turned his mark inside out before shooting low to the far left post in a beautiful solo effort. He put the game away with second goal in the 81st minute, pushing a shot past Thornton from the left side.
The 28-year old has scored eight goals this season, matching his single-season careet high, which he set in 2009.
Region XII congratulates Omar on the award.

This year, members of the Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams as well as the Women’s Tennis team spent part of their Labor Day answering phones and collecting pledges for Jerry’s Kids.
The Muscular Dystrophy Association is a voluntary health agency - a dedicated partnership between scientists and concerned citizens aimed at conquering neuromuscular diseases that affect more than a million Americans.
MDA combats neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive medical and community services, and far-reaching professional and public health education. With national headquarters in Tucson, MDA has more than 200 offices across the country, sponsors 230 hospital-affiliated clinics and supports nearly 400 research projects around the world.
MDA supports more research on neuromuscular diseases than any other private-sector organization in the world. MDA scientists are in the forefront of gene therapy research and have uncovered the genetic defects responsible for several forms of muscular dystrophy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease), childhood spinal muscular atrophy, and several other neuromuscular conditions.
