Region XII is honored to announce the renaming of the region's Real Sport Award to "The Norma Dycus Real Sport Award. The Real Sport Award was instituted in 1995 and is given biannually to athletes, coaches, administrators or schools for displaying acts of outstanding fair play.
Going forward this award will be given in honor of retiring Sinclair Community College Athletic Director, Norma Dycus. Coach Dycus is an integral part of Region XII athletics. She served for 15 years as Women's Region Director and is the current National Junior College Athletic Association Secretary/Treasurer.
Over the years, Region XII has benefited greatly from Coach Dycus's leadership and advocacy of region sports. Coach Dycus saw early on the importance of combining great competiveness with great integrity. According to the Real Sport nomination form, being a Real Sport is...
being humble enough to savor the victories while appreciating your opponent. It's being resilient enough to bounce back from a defeat and turn it into something positive... It involves respect, honor, pride, responsibility, winning with humility and losing with class, ethics, self-respect, and integrity. This award is a way of recognizing and honoring Real Sports...
The Real Sport Certificate bears a quote that Coach Dycus brought to the award and to Region XII athletics.
"The game can be played simply to win, or it can be played with the intent of being more than the person once was when the game began. That is what makes a winner."
It is this philosophy along with countless hours, dedication and leadership that Secretary/Treasurer leaves with Region XII and we are honored to carry it into the future.
