The Sinclair Community College baseball team finished third at the NJCAA Division II World Series in Enid, OK on Saturday. The Tartan Pride's finish is the highest for a Region XII team since 2005 when Grand Rapids Community College won the title.
Sinclair opened the tournament on Sunday, May 29th with a 9-2 win over Monroe (NY) Community College. The fifth ranked Tartan Pride were lead by Ben Myers (SO/Grove City, OH) who went two for four with a home run, three runs scored, two runs batted in and a walk. Tyler Cowles (SO/Grove City, OH) also went two for four with a home run, a run batted in, a run scored and a walk. Daniel O'Keefe (SO/Ashville, OH) also had two hits in four at bats and a run batted in. Alex Anders picked up the win going four innings allowing two hits, one earned run, walked five and struck out five. Travis Rowland (SO/Farifield, OH) went one and two-thirds innings with two strikeouts to pick up the save.
Sinclair then defeated Mercer (NJ) County Community College in a game that took two days to finish. The Tartan Pride were up 6-4 on Tuesday night when the rains came and suspended the game. It was resumed Wednesday afternoon and Sinclair went on to win 12-8 to advance in the winners bracket. Zeth Tanner (SO/Yorktown, OH) went four for four with three doubles, three runs scored and a walk. Tyler Cowles went three for three with a double, two runs scored, a run batted in and a walk. Billy Kidd (SO/Marysville, OH) when three for four with two runs batted in and a run scored. Ryan Falls (FR/Painesville, OH) picked up the win in relief going two innings, allowing one hit, one run (earned), two walks and three strike outs. Rowland picked up his second save of the tournament going one and one-third innings, allowing one hit and striking out one batter.
Sinclair played GateWay (AZ) Community College on Thursday in the winner's bracket final. The Geckos defeated Sinclair 6-3 to put the Tartan Pride in the consolation bracket. Cowles, O'Keefe, Brody Basilone (SO/Lexington, OH), Chad Roberts (SO/Wlimington, OH) and Nick Massey (FR/Beavercreek, OH) all had two hits in the game for Sinclair. Cowles, Roberts, and Massey all had an RBI.
On Friday, Sinclair played Mercer County again and won the game 11-1 in five innings. The Tartan Pride scored eight runs in the bottom of the first and cruised to victory. Massey, Cowles, Roberts, Myers and Connor Cleary (SO/Lexington, KY) all had two hits in the contest. Cleary had two doubles, two runs scored and one run batted in. Myers, O'Keefe and Massey all had doubles in the game, while Roberts score two runs and drove in two other runs. Falls went the distance to pick up his second win of the tournament. He allowed on hit, one run, unearned, walked one and struck out three.
Sinclair then played Jones (MS) County Junior College on Saturday afternoon for a chance to play GateWay for the National Championship. The Bobcats proved to much for the Tartan Pride, as Sinclair fell in the game 11-4. Roberts, Basilone and Tanner each collected two this for SInclair in the loss.
Cowles and Falls earned All-Tournament Team honors of the Tartan Pride. Sinclair finishes the season at 53-12.
